rediscovering Night Terrors of 1927

there’s a plaque in my room that my friends gifted me for my birthday years back when we were in college. that year, they struggled to gift me apparently so they gave me multiple gifts and this was one of them.

i’ve had the plaque in my room since that day but in the recent years, i didn’t actually notice it. it faded into the background. my eyes skipped over it every time even though i go near it for other things multiple times a day.

last week, for some reason, my eyes got caught on it and it surprised me.

it is a transparent plaque printed with my favourite song at that time. instead of the album cover, they printed one of my illustrations because i had just started making digital illustrations.

but the point here, is the song and the artist.

Night Terrors of 1927 was my absolute favourite artist at that time. i was obsessed with their songs and made Fall Into You my personality (which was why my friends gifted me this).

but somehow, in a few years, i completely forgot about the artist.

i blame spotify for this because i’m pretty sure i forgot about them after moving to spotify. i used to download mp3 files of all the songs i liked so i always had my old favourites in my library of 1 thousand songs.

when spotify came to India, it was simply too much work to shift all my music so i started creating a new playlist on spotify with my current favs alone and built on that.

last year, i got an iphone and couldn’t transfer my library of songs properly. so i saved it on the laptop in a folder and moved on (however much it devastated me to leave my history of music behind).

so basically, as i moved on to newer technology and devices, my years of music got left behind including a lot of the songs that i loved.

once in a while, i remember or come across an old one and listen to it, remembering just how good it is. i never came across Night Terrors of 1927 again until i noticed the plaque in my room.

after i realized that i haven’t heard music by the artist in years, i immediately played it on my speaker and fell in love with their songs all over again.

of course, i played Fall Into You first. later, i listened to it on earphones and loved it more. the slow but steady build up in the beginning transported me back to the days of travelling in bus to college in the morning, looking out the window, listening to this song.

i might have forgotten about the song but i didn’t forget the lyrics. i still remember every word of this song (and the others that i love by this artist).

my favourite part of the song is definitely towards the end, at 3:14. that melody, those lyrics.. too good.

i also remembered how much i love their symbol. the NTO written in a connected way with 1927 on the T. i used to doodle this symbol in my notebooks!

after listening to Fall Into You a couple of times, i queued up all of their songs. and i fell in love with each of their songs again, especially my old favourites.

they are so damn good, i couldn’t help up write paragraphs about it to a friend. i had to share with someone. i was rediscovering an amazing artist and i didn’t want to keep it to myself.

When You Were Mine is the only song that they’ve done with another artist and i still absolutely love this song. it’s a more upbeat song compared to the rest of their music and the chorus steals the show.

Each of the above songs, brilliant. Especially Never One to Complain. I ended up listening to Never One to Complain at work for the first time after years and I couldn’t help but stop working for a few minutes and lose myself in the song.

As I listened to the artist’s entire discography and replayed it multiple times, a new favourite song emerged.

I still love Fall Into You but there was clearly a different song that started playing in my mind at random times.

the song is present twice as part of different albums/EPs but i love this one better. the photo matches the song’s vibe.

Always Take You Back combines multiple paces to make a masterpiece. it starts slow and picks up the pace twice. so when the lyrics come faster at 2:25, you can’t help but sit back and listen to it.

the part that plays in my mind at random times is from 3:40. i can’t believe all those different paces and different lyrics are part of the same song. it links but it also feels like they’re choruses of different good songs instead of multiple parts of the same.

there isn’t a playlist for Night Terrors of 1927’s discography on spotify so i went ahead and created one titled similarly. they only have 3 albums out, totalling 17 songs, making an hour of music.

i guess they’re not that popular. but i absolutely love their music and i want to share it. hence, this post.

give the playlist a listen and let me know which song is your favourite.
